Day 7 of the 40Days for Life Campaign, Brighton UK

Along with constant prayer and intercession we had some wonderful conversations today…

… One particular man who was initially aggressive, rude and abusive towards prayer volunteers as he arrived at the clinic with his partner changed his stance completely towards our presence there and left after shaking our hands and encouraging us! Amazing to see the change of heart happen before our eyes.

Another four young boys who came to laugh at our campaign were visibly challenged by the response of one of our volunteers. They posed the usual question – “What about a 16 year old who gets pregnant and her parents threaten to throw her out?” The volunteer replied “I was pregnant at age 17 and my parents did throw me out. I had to live at a hostel for the rest of my time. My baby is now 28 and I have 2 grandchildren through her.” They challenged her again – “But did you go to college?” “Yes,” she said “I went later”. They then took our magazine to read – which they had previously refused.”

The Brighton Oratory (CDC) is supporting this campaign by our prayers and active participation in the prayer vigil taking place outside the BPAS Wiston Clinic off Old Shoreham Road. The vigil is peaceful, simply a group of (mostly) women standing opposite the clinic (not causing an obstruction) and quietly praying for the delivery of women and babies from the death and personal misery that is offered inside the clinic.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, ABORT67 [be careful if you click on the link, a graphic video presentation begins automatically after 10 seconds] are also conducting peaceful displays outside Wiston’s. The approach taken by ABORT67 is certainly controversial and not to everyone’s taste, they use pictures to show what the reality of foeticide (abortion) looks like, but they do so peacefully without shouting slogans, without voicing their opinion unless asked for it. Don’t believe what BPAS have tried to say about ABORT67, I have actually witnessed their displays several times and the behaviour of the display participants is impeccable; they have sensibly taken the precaution to video and audio record all their displays, so there is plenty of counter-evidence to the suggestion that they “hurl insults” or “shout down” those who disagree with them. They don’t. I know that for a fact.

I know emotions as well as opinions are often highly charged around foeticide, but recent evidence demonstrates that abortuaries don’t give mothers/parents all the facts about abortion, how it is performed, what happens to the foetus etc. They certainly don’t show them pictures or videos of the various types of operation. Neither do they offer full and comprehensive counselling before and after an event that will emotionally if not sometimes physically/psychologically scar the mother for life.

ABORT67 operates on the principle that until abortion is seen, it will never be understood. Whilst their approach is certainly “full on” its worth remembering that they are the only people concerned with the abortion industry enough to show mothers/parents what actually happens to a child being aborted. ABORT67 recognises that the most successful cultural and societal change has previously occurred through the use of powerful images, such as William Wilberforce’s anti-slavery campaign which used sketches portraying the reality of the horrors of the slave trade. When people saw the appalling conditions of the slave transportation ships and the treatment of the slaves, social attitudes towards slavery began to change…
