Inventione Sanctæ Crucis [IV post Pascha]

May 3 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm BST

FEAST OF THE INVENTION OF THE HOLY CROSS (INVENTIO SANCTÆ CRUCIS) WITH COMMEMORATION OF DOMINICA IV POST PASCHA in the traditional Roman Rite (1 May, pre-1955 calendar) unites the triumph of the Cross with the ongoing Paschal mystery, commemorating the finding (inventio) of the True Cross by Saint Helena under the reign of Constantine the Great in Jerusalem, while also preserving the liturgical voice of the Fourth Sunday after Easter (Cantáte); the Mass exalts the Cross as the instrument of redemption—once a sign of shame, now the throne of Christ’s victory over sin and death—while the commemoration recalls Our Lord’s promise of the Paraclete (John 16:5–14), thereby holding together the historical triumph of the Cross, the present life of grace through the Holy Ghost, and the Church’s joyful yet vigilant pilgrimage in Paschaltide; thus the faithful are taught that the glory of the Resurrection flows inseparably from the sacrifice of Calvary, and that the Cross, once discovered in history, must be continually “found” in the life of the Christian through sacrifice, obedience, and union with the Crucified and Risen Lord.
