Good Shepherd Sunday
April 19 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm BST
Good Shepherd Sunday (Second Sunday after Easter — Misericordia Domini) in the Tridentine Rite presents the Risen Christ as the Bonus Pastor who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11–16), uniting the mysteries of Passion and Resurrection in a single act of pastoral charity; the Introit proclaims that “the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord,” while the Epistle (1 Peter 2:21–25) reminds the faithful that, once wandering, they have returned to the Shepherd and Bishop of their souls, thereby framing the Christian life as one of docile following after Christ’s sacrificial example; situated within the joy of Eastertide, the liturgy deepens into a meditation on divine governance, contrasting the true Shepherd—who knows, guards, and dies for His flock—with the hireling who abandons it, and thus implicitly calling both clergy and laity to fidelity, vigilance, and self-giving love under the authority of Him who reigns not by force, but by the Cross.
