St Peter Canisius, Pirest, Confessor & Doctor of the Church: Missa “In medio“
St Peter Canisius (1521–1597) was one of the foremost architects of Catholic renewal during the upheavals of the Protestant Reformation. A native of Nijmegen, he received his education at the University of Cologne, where he distinguished himself in law and the humanities before turning decisively toward the service of the Church.
In 1543, under the influence of Peter Faber, he entered the Society of Jesus, becoming part of its first generation. Ordained a priest in 1546, he soon took part in the work surrounding the Council of Trent, aligning himself with the Church’s great effort to clarify doctrine and restore discipline.
Canisius devoted his life chiefly to the re-Catholicisation of German-speaking lands—Germany, Austria, and Bohemia—at a time when many regions had fallen into doctrinal confusion. His method was marked not by polemical harshness but by clarity, patience, and pastoral charity.
His most enduring contribution was his series of catechisms, especially the Summa Doctrinae Christianae (1555), which presented Catholic teaching with precision and accessibility. These works spread widely and became foundational tools of instruction; in many places, his name became synonymous with “catechism.”
Alongside his writings, he founded Jesuit colleges in key centres such as Ingolstadt, Vienna, and Prague, forming both clergy and laity in sound doctrine. His influence extended into ecclesiastical and political life, yet he remained above all a man of prayer, deeply devoted to the Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin.
He died in Fribourg on December 21, 1597. Canonised and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, he is honoured as the “Second Apostle of Germany.”
St Peter Canisius stands as a model of how the Church is renewed in times of crisis: through doctrinal clarity, patient instruction, and holiness of life.
INTROIT Ecclesiasticus 15: 5
In the midst of the Church the Lord opened his mouth: and filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding: He clothed him with a robe of glory. Allelúja, allelúja. (Ps. 91: 2) It is good to give praise to the Lord: and to sing to Thy Name, O Most High. v. Glory be…etc

EPISTLE 2 Timothy 4: 1-8
Lesson from the Epistle of blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, I charge thee before God and Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead, by His coming, and His Kingdom. Preach the word: be instant in season: reprove, entreat, rebuke in all patience, and doctrine. For there shall be a time, when they will not endure sound doctrine; but according to their own desires they will heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and will indeed turn away their hearing from the truth, but will be turned unto fables. But be thou vigilant, labor in all things, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill thy ministry. Be sober. For I am even now ready to be sacrificed; and the time of my dissolution is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the Faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just Judge, will render to me in that day; and not only to me, but to them also that love His coming.
GRADUAL/ALLELUIA
Alleluia, alleluia. V. The Lord loved him and adorned him: He clothed him with a robe of glory. Alleluia. Alleluia. The just man shall spring as the lily: and shall flourish forever before the Lord. Alleluia.
GOSPEL Matthew 5: 13-19
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples,”You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt lose its savor, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain can not be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house; so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in Heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For, amen I say unto you, till Heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall not pass of the law till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of Heaven: but he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of Heaven.”
OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Psalm 88: 21
I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him; for My hand shall help him and My arm shall strengthen him. Alleluia.
SECRET
May the pious prayer of holy Peter thy Confessor and illustrious Doctor be not wanting to us, O Lord, but make our offerings acceptable to thee and ever win for us thy mercy. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God Forever and ever.
PREFACE of the Easter
It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, at all times to praise Thee, O Lord, but more gloriously especially in this season when Christ our Pasch was sacrificed. For He is the Lamb Who hath taken away the sins of the world: Who by dying hath destroyed our death: and by rising again hath restored us to life. And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth!
COMMUNION ANTIPHON Luke 12: 42
The faithful and wise servant, whom his lord setteth over his family: to give them their measure of wheat in due season. Alleluia.
