Carissimi: Today’s Mass; Vigil of St Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist

stmatthewVigil of St Matthew, Apostle & Evangelist: Missa “Ego autem

(From a homily of St. Jerome, Priest: Commentary on Matthew, Bk. 1, Ch. 9)

The other Evangelists, out of respect and reverence for Matthew would not call him by his ordinary name, but addressed him – for he had two names – as Levi. But Matthew refers to himself as Matthew. According to the words of Solomon, ‘The just is the first accuser of himself,’ and in another place, ‘Confess your sins that you may be justified.’ Accordingly, Matthew calls himself, in his Gospel, both Matthew and the publican, to show his readers that no one should despair of salvation who is converted to a better life, since he was himself changed suddenly from a publican to an apostle.

INTROIT Ps. 52

AS for me I am like a green olive tree in the house off the Lord; by trust hath been in the tender mercy of my God: and I will hope in thy Name for thy Saints like it well. Ps. ibid. Why boastest thou thyself, thou tyrant: that thou canst do mischief? V. Glory be.

EPISTLE Ecclesiasticus 44:22-45:5, 7

THE blessing of the Lord was upon the head of the righteous. Therefore the Lord gave him an heritage; and divided his portion among the twelve tribes. And he found favour in the sight of all fleshy. And the Lord magnified him so that his enemies stood in fear of him. By his words he caused the wonders to cease: he made him glorious in the sight of kings, and gave him a commandment for his people, and shewed him his glory. He sanctified him in his faithfulness and meekness, and chose him out of all men. He gave him commandments before his face, even the law of life and knowledge, and exalted him. An everlasting covenant he made with him: the Lord beautified him with ornaments of righteousness: and clothed him with a robe of glory.

GRADUAL/ALLELUIA  Ps. 92.

The righteous shall flourish like a palm-tree: and shall spread abroad like a cedar in Libanus in the house of the Lord. V. To tell of thy loving-kindness in the morning, and of thy truth in the night-season.

GOSPEL  John 15:12-16

After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”
