Carissimi: Sunday’s Mass; Sunday XI Post Pentecost

Sunday XI Post Pentecost: Missa “Deus in loco santo suo

The Church puts her hope in God from whom she receives her help (Gradual). Our Lord has healed the wounds of mankind (Offertory) and has given us strength and courage (Introit). The theme is infinite charity and the mercy of God.

St. Paul repeats to the Corinthians the miraculous transformation which has taken place in him through the grace of God (Epistle).

The healing of the deaf and dumb, related by St. Mark, is the story of divine mercy towards each one of us (Gospel). Deaf to the teachings of the Master, we had become dumb by sin and incapable of praising God. But repeating, according to His command, what Christ did, the Church in baptism has opened our ears and loosed our tongue, so that henceforth we may hear the divine word and freely proclaim our faith.

INTROIT Psalm 67: 6, 7, 36

God in His holy place;God who maketh men of one mind to dwell in a house: He shall give power and strength to His people. (Ps. 67: 2) Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered: and let them that hate Him flee from before His face.

EPISTLE 1 Cor. 15:1-10

Lesson from the first letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians
Brethren: I recall to your minds the Gospel that I preached to you, which also you received, wherein also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold it fast, as I preached it to you – unless you have believed to no purpose. For I delivered to you first of all, what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day, according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, and after that to the Eleven. Then He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at one time, many of whom are with us still, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by the Apostles. And last of all, as by one born out of due time, He was seen also by me. For I am the least of the Apostles, and am not worthy to be called an Apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace in me has not been fruitless.

GRADUAL/ALLELUIA Psalm 27: 7, 1

In God hath my heart confided, and I have been helped and my flesh hath flourished again and with my will I will give praise to Him. V. Unto Thee have I cried, O Lord: O my God, be not Thou silent depart not from me. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ps. 80: 2,3) Rejoice in God our helper sing aloud to the God of Jacob take a pleasant psalm with the harp. Alleluia.

GOSPEL Mark 7: 31-37

At that time, Jesus going out to the coasts of Tyre, came by Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. And they bring to Him one deaf and dumb, and they besought Him that He would lay His hand upon him. And taking him from the multitude apart, He put His fingers into his ears, and spitting, He touched his tongue and looking up to heaven, He groaned and said to him: Ephpheta, that is, Be thou opened: and immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke right. And He charged them that they should tell no man: but the more He charged them so much the more a great deal did they publish it and so much the more did they wonder, saying: He hath done all things well He hath made both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Ps 29:2-3

I will extol You, O Lord, for You drew me clear and did not let my enemies rejoice over me; O Lord, I cried out to You and You healed me.

PREFACE of the Holy Trinity

It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
