St Donatus, Bishop & Martyr: Missa “Sacerdótes Dei”
Donatus was born in Nicomedia, a city in Asia Minor. He was elected second bishop of the city of Arretium in 346A.D. Being illustrious for sanctity and miracles, as St. Gregory the Great assures us, he was apprehended by Quadratianus, the Augustalis, or imperial prefect of Tuscany, in the reign of Julian the Apostate. Refusing to adore the idols, he suffered many torments with invincible constancy, and at length finished his martyrdom by the sword in 361. His relics are enshrined in the cathedral of Arezzo.
From “Passio Donati”, a text of 6th century A.D. “The Bishop (S. Donatus) was celebrating Mass with his two deacons – Antimus and Asterius – during an ordination rite. Some pagans entered the church while Antimus was giving the communion from a glass chalice, and with violence they threw it on the ground, shattering it to pieces. After having put together all the pieces, Saint Donatus found that one piece was still missing at the bottom of the chalice, but unconcerned about the matter, continued to serve the wine, without even a drop falling out of the chalice. This fact so astonished the pagans, that it caused their conversion. A month later, Saint Donatus was arrested and put to death with other Christians.”

for the Pope
O God, the sheperd and ruler of all the faithful, gratiously look upon thy servant Benedict, who thou hast willed to be chied pastor of thy Church; grant him we beseech thee, by word and example to profit those over whom he rules, that together with the flock entrusted to him, he may attain to life everlasting. Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end.
EPISTLE James 1:2 – 12.
Dearly beloved: Esteem it all joy, when you fall into various trials, knowing that the trying of your faith begets patience. And let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and entire, lacking nothing. But if any of you is wanting in wisdom, let him ask it of God, Who gives abundantly to all men, and does not reproach; and it will be given to him. But let him ask with faith, without hesitation. For he who hesitates is like a wave of the sea, driven and carried about by the wind. Therefore, let not such a one think that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. But let the brother of lowly condition glory in his high estate, and the rich man in his low condition; for he will pass away like the flower of the grass. For the sun rises with a burning heat and parches the grass, and its flower fails and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So too will the rich man wither in his ways. Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been tried, he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him.
GRADUAL/ALLELUIA Ps 36:30-31
The mouth of the just man tells of wisdom, and his tongue utters what is right. V. The law of his God is in his heart, and his steps do not falter. Alleluia, alleluia. V. The just man shall not be troubled, for the Lord strengthens his hand. Alleluia.
GOSPEL Mark 13:33 – 37
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Take heed, watch and pray, for you do not know when the time is: just as a man, when he leaves home to journey abroad, puts his servants in charge, to each his work, and gives orders to the porter to keep watch. Watch, therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or early in the morning; lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to all, ‘Watch.’

PREFACEof the Common
It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Though whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions adore it, the powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do thou command that it be permitted to us join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise:
