Sunday Lent III

March 8 @ 10:00 am 11:30 am GMT

The Third Sunday of Lent deepens the Church’s call to interior purification. Having contemplated temptation and glory in the previous Sundays, the faithful are now confronted with the reality of spiritual conflict within the human heart.

The Gospel traditionally recounts Christ casting out a devil from one who was mute. When the demon is expelled, the man speaks. Some marvel; others accuse Our Lord of acting by the power of Beelzebub. Christ responds with solemn clarity: “Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation.” He declares that if He casts out devils by the finger of God, then the Kingdom of God has come upon them.

This Sunday exposes the seriousness of Lent. It is not merely about external discipline, but about liberation from sin’s dominion. The devil’s hold renders the soul spiritually mute—unable to praise God as it ought. Christ’s grace restores speech, restores worship, restores order.

Yet the Gospel also warns: when an unclean spirit is cast out but finds the house empty and unguarded, it returns with greater force. Lent, therefore, is not satisfied with momentary reform. The soul must not be left vacant; it must be filled—with prayer, with virtue, with charity, with sacramental life.

The Third Sunday of Lent teaches vigilance. Conversion must be sustained. Grace must be guarded. The Kingdom of God is not advanced by neutrality but by decisive allegiance. Christ stands as the stronger One who binds the enemy—but the faithful must remain united to Him.

In this mid-Lenten hour, the Church calls her children to integrity of heart: a kingdom not divided, a house not empty, a soul wholly given to God.
