In Assumptione Beatæ Mariæ Virginis

August 15, 2025 @ 10:00 am 11:30 am BST

On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather with joyful reverence to honour the glorious mystery of Our Lady’s bodily assumption into heaven—a dogma of the Faith, a triumph of grace, and a foretaste of the resurrection promised to all who die in Christ.

Clad in festive vestments, the sacred ministers ascend to the altar for the Missa “Gaudeámus omnes in Dómino”, and the chapel resounds with the solemn strains of ancient chant: Let us all rejoice in the Lord, celebrating a festival day in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The faithful lift up their hearts with the Church universal, recalling that the Mother of God, preserved from all stain of sin, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the close of her earthly life. In her, the Church sees the perfection of Christian discipleship and the pledge of her own final victory.

The Epistle (Judith 13:22–25) and Gospel (Luke 10:38–42) speak not only to the singular blessedness of Mary, but to the divine logic by which lowliness is exalted, and silent fidelity rewarded. Like Judith, Mary is the one whom all generations shall call blessed. And like Mary of Bethany, the Blessed Virgin chose “the better part” from the beginning, giving her whole self to the Word of God and bearing Him into the world.

The faithful of Brighton, surrounded by the decay of a secular culture that mocks purity, dismisses humility, and forgets eternity, find in the Assumption a radiant sign of hope and consolation. In Mary, exalted above the choirs of angels, they behold not only the honour of womanhood but the destiny of all who cleave to Christ: to be raised body and soul into everlasting glory.

As incense rises before the statue of Our Lady, crowned with roses and lilies, prayers ascend for the triumph of her Immaculate Heart, for the protection of the Church, and for the grace to persevere in fidelity amidst the trials of this world. The faithful go forth renewed, singing the Salve Regina not merely as petitioners, but as children confident in their Queen and Mother, who now reigns with Christ, and intercedes without ceasing for those still in pilgrimage.

Assumpta est Maria in caelum: gaudet exercitus angelorum. Mary has been assumed into heaven; the hosts of angels rejoice—and so does the Church on earth, ever faithful, ever Marian, ever ancient, ever new.
