SUMMARY:Holy Saturday
DESCRIPTION:The Paschal Vigil\, in the pre-1955 Roman Rite\, is celebrated on the morning of Holy Saturday as a profoundly symbolic anticipation of the Resurrection\, in which the Church moves from darkness to light through a sequence of ancient rites rich in typology and theological density: the new fire is struck and the Paschal candle blessed and inscribed\, signifying Christ the Light of the world; the solemn chanting of the Exsultet proclaims the triumph of the Redeemer; a series of twelve prophecies traces salvation history from creation through the promises of the Old Covenant to their fulfilment in Christ; the baptismal font is blessed with elaborate ceremonies\, including the infusion of holy oils and the triple immersion of the Paschal candle\, expressing the life-giving power of Christ’s Resurrection; catechumens are baptised\, and the faithful renew their baptismal identity implicitly through participation; and finally\, the Mass of Holy Saturday is celebrated with the sudden return of the Gloria and the ringing of bells\, marking the transition from Lenten austerity to Paschal joy—yet still with a certain restraint\, as the full splendour of Easter is reserved for the following day\, when the Resurrection is proclaimed in its fullness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this:\n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n Like this:Like Loading...

SUMMARY:Good Friday
DESCRIPTION:Good Friday\, in the traditional pre-1955 Roman Rite\, is the day on which the Church enters most profoundly into the mystery of the Crucifixion\, not by offering the Sacrifice of the Mass\, but by participating in it in a stark\, unbloody manner through the Mass of the Presanctified\, in which no consecration takes place and the faithful do not receive Holy Communion; rather\, after the chanting of the Passion and the ancient solemn intercessions for the Church and the world\, the Cross is unveiled and adored\, and the Sacred Host—consecrated on Holy Thursday—is brought in solemn silence from the altar of repose\, with only the priest communicating\, thereby expressing with liturgical clarity that the Sacrifice of Calvary is unique\, unrepeatable\, and presently contemplated rather than sacramentally renewed\, while the stripped altar\, the prostration\, and the pervasive silence draw the faithful into the desolation of Golgotha\, where Christ\, the true Victim\, offers Himself once for all for the salvation of the world.

SUMMARY:Maundy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:Holy Thursday—traditionally known as Maundy Thursday—commemorates the institution of the Eucharist and the priesthood at the Last Supper\, when Christ\, on the night before His Passion\, offered bread and wine as His Body and Blood and commanded His Apostles to “do this in memory of me\,” thereby establishing the perpetual sacrifice of the Mass; in the same sacred context\, He gave the new commandment (mandatum) of charity\, exemplified in the washing of the disciples’ feet\, revealing that true authority in the Church is inseparable from sacrificial service\, while the liturgy itself—especially in the traditional Roman Rite—moves from the solemn joy of the Gloria\, after which the bells fall silent\, into the stark gravity of the Passion\, culminating in the stripping of the altar and the translation of the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of repose\, inviting the faithful to keep watch with Christ in His agony in the garden as the Church enters into the mystery of His redemptive suffering.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Palm Sunday stands at the threshold of Holy Week\, uniting triumph and tragedy in a single\, solemn liturgy. The Church first commemorates Our Lord’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem\, when the crowds welcomed Him with palms and cries of “Hosanna to the Son of David.” Shortly thereafter\, the Passion according to Saint Matthew is proclaimed in its full gravity. Acclamation gives way to accusation; praise turns to condemnation. \n\n\n\nThe blessing and procession of palms recall Christ’s kingship. He enters the Holy City not as a conqueror mounted on a warhorse\, but in humility\, riding upon a colt. The gesture fulfills prophecy and reveals the nature of His reign: a kingdom not of earthly force\, but of sacrificial love. The faithful\, bearing blessed palms\, symbolically accompany Him\, pledging loyalty to the King. \n\n\n\nYet the Gospel of the Mass confronts us with the swift changeability of the human heart. The same city that cries “Hosanna” will soon cry “Crucify Him.” Palm Sunday therefore carries a warning. It is not enough to admire Christ in moments of enthusiasm; fidelity must endure through suffering and scandal. \n\n\n\nThe Passion narrative dominates the liturgy. We hear of betrayal\, denial\, injustice\, abandonment\, and crucifixion. The Church does not abridge the account. She places it before her children in full\, that they may understand the cost of redemption. Christ’s kingship is inseparable from His Cross. \n\n\n\nPalm Sunday teaches that true discipleship requires perseverance. It invites the faithful to move beyond surface devotion toward steadfast loyalty. The palms we carry are signs of victory—but victory through sacrifice. As Holy Week begins\, the Church calls her children to walk with Christ\, not only in acclaim\, but in anguish\, trusting that the road to Calvary leads to the empty tomb.

SUMMARY:Passion Sunday
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Sunday of Lent\, traditionally called Passion Sunday in the older Roman usage\, marks a decisive intensification of the season. The Church now turns her gaze directly toward the mystery of the Passion. The crosses are veiled\, sacred images are covered\, and the liturgy adopts a tone of grave solemnity. The glory glimpsed earlier is now hidden; the hour of conflict approaches. \n\n\n\nIn the Gospel\, Christ declares with startling clarity: “Before Abraham was made\, I AM.” At these words\, His hearers take up stones to cast at Him. The tension is unmistakable. The claim to divine identity is no longer implicit but explicit. The opposition hardens. The shadow of Calvary lengthens. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday reveals that the Passion is not a tragic accident but the consequence of truth. Christ suffers because He is who He says He is. The Light exposes darkness; the truth provokes resistance. The faithful are reminded that fidelity to Christ may bring misunderstanding\, rejection\, even hostility. \n\n\n\nThe veiling of images during this period is deeply symbolic. The Church enters into the concealment of Christ. As He hides Himself and goes out of the temple\, so the liturgy hides His visible signs of glory. The faithful must seek Him by faith alone. The senses are restrained; the interior life must deepen. \n\n\n\nThe Fifth Sunday of Lent therefore summons the Christian to courageous perseverance. The Cross is now near. The Church walks with Christ into the gathering storm\, not with despair\, but with resolute love. For beyond the veiled sanctuary stands the unveiled triumph of Easter.

SUMMARY:Sunday Lent IV
DESCRIPTION:The Fourth Sunday of Lent\, traditionally known as Laetare Sunday\, introduces a note of restrained joy into the penitential season. The Introit begins with the word Laetare — “Rejoice” — taken from the prophet Isaias: “Rejoice\, O Jerusalem… be glad for joy\, you that have been in sorrow.” The Church\, like a wise mother\, lightens the discipline for a moment and directs our gaze toward the approaching victory of Easter. \n\n\n\nThe Gospel recounts the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. In the midst of a desert place\, Christ feeds the multitude. The scene is deliberate: the wilderness of Lent becomes the setting for divine provision. Hunger is met not with despair\, but with abundance. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday reveals that penance is not deprivation for its own sake. The Lord who calls us into fasting is also the Lord who nourishes. The miracle foreshadows the Holy Eucharist — the Bread from heaven given for the life of the world. The desert is not empty; it is inhabited by Christ. \n\n\n\nLiturgically\, the rose vestments permitted on this day symbolise this tempered joy. The Church does not abandon penance\, but she reminds her children that sorrow is ordered toward consolation. Discipline is ordered toward delight. The Cross is ordered toward Resurrection. \n\n\n\nThe Fourth Sunday of Lent teaches perseverance with hope. Even as the struggle continues\, grace is already at work. The faithful are sustained not by their own strength\, but by the sustaining hand of Christ\, who feeds His people on the journey and prepares them for the Paschal feast.

SUMMARY:Sunday Lent III
DESCRIPTION:The Third Sunday of Lent deepens the Church’s call to interior purification. Having contemplated temptation and glory in the previous Sundays\, the faithful are now confronted with the reality of spiritual conflict within the human heart. \n\n\n\nThe Gospel traditionally recounts Christ casting out a devil from one who was mute. When the demon is expelled\, the man speaks. Some marvel; others accuse Our Lord of acting by the power of Beelzebub. Christ responds with solemn clarity: “Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation.” He declares that if He casts out devils by the finger of God\, then the Kingdom of God has come upon them. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday exposes the seriousness of Lent. It is not merely about external discipline\, but about liberation from sin’s dominion. The devil’s hold renders the soul spiritually mute—unable to praise God as it ought. Christ’s grace restores speech\, restores worship\, restores order. \n\n\n\nYet the Gospel also warns: when an unclean spirit is cast out but finds the house empty and unguarded\, it returns with greater force. Lent\, therefore\, is not satisfied with momentary reform. The soul must not be left vacant; it must be filled—with prayer\, with virtue\, with charity\, with sacramental life. \n\n\n\nThe Third Sunday of Lent teaches vigilance. Conversion must be sustained. Grace must be guarded. The Kingdom of God is not advanced by neutrality but by decisive allegiance. Christ stands as the stronger One who binds the enemy—but the faithful must remain united to Him. \n\n\n\nIn this mid-Lenten hour\, the Church calls her children to integrity of heart: a kingdom not divided\, a house not empty\, a soul wholly given to God.

SUMMARY:Sunday Lent II
DESCRIPTION:The Second Sunday of Lent leads the faithful from the austerity of the desert to the glory of the mountain. Having contemplated Christ’s combat with the tempter on the First Sunday\, the Church now presents the mystery of the Transfiguration. \n\n\n\nThe Gospel recounts how Our Lord takes Peter\, James\, and John up a high mountain and is transfigured before them. His face shines as the sun; His garments become white as light. Moses and Elias appear\, speaking with Him of His coming Passion. The Father’s voice is heard: “This is My beloved Son\, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye Him.” \n\n\n\nThis luminous vision is not a pause in Lent\, but its revelation. The Transfiguration shows both who Christ truly is and where the path of suffering leads. The Cross is not defeat; it is the road to glory. The disciples are given this glimpse so that\, when they see Him disfigured on Calvary\, they may remember His divine splendour. \n\n\n\nLiturgically\, the Church teaches that penance is not an end in itself. The Christian fasts in order to see more clearly; he disciplines the flesh so that the soul may behold divine light. Lent II therefore strengthens hope. After the realism of temptation comes the promise of transformation. \n\n\n\nThe Second Sunday of Lent reminds the faithful that the Christian journey moves from desert to mountain\, from struggle to vision\, from Cross to Resurrection. Those who follow Christ in sacrifice will share in His glory.

SUMMARY:Sunday Lent I
DESCRIPTION:The First Sunday of Lent marks the Church’s entrance into the desert with Christ. Having begun the penitential season on Ash Wednesday\, the faithful now contemplate the Gospel of Our Lord’s forty days of fasting and His temptation by the devil in the wilderness. \n\n\n\nThe liturgy presents Lent not merely as human effort\, but as participation in Christ’s own combat. The Introit traditionally begins\, “Invocabit me\, et ego exaudiam eum” — “He shall call upon Me\, and I will answer him” — words that express divine protection amid trial. The Epistle exhorts perseverance in faith\, while the Gospel recounts how Christ defeats the tempter through obedience\, humility\, and fidelity to the Word of God. \n\n\n\nThis Sunday establishes the spiritual pattern for the entire season: fasting\, prayer\, and resistance to temptation. The desert is not abandonment\, but preparation. Christ’s victory reveals that temptation itself is not sin; rather\, it becomes the arena in which fidelity is proven. \n\n\n\nThe First Sunday of Lent therefore calls the faithful to seriousness and confidence. The Christian life is spiritual warfare\, yet it is warfare already won in Christ. Lent begins not in fear\, but in disciplined hope — walking with the Lord into the desert so as to rise with Him at Easter.

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Western Church and initiates a forty-day period of penance\, prayer\, and preparation for Easter. Its name derives from the ancient custom of placing blessed ashes upon the heads of the faithful as a sign of repentance and mortality. \n\n\n\nDuring the liturgy\, ashes—traditionally made from the burned palms of the previous Palm Sunday—are blessed and imposed with the words: “Remember\, man\, that thou art dust\, and unto dust thou shalt return\,” or “Repent\, and believe the Gospel.” These formulas unite two essential themes: the frailty of human life and the urgent call to conversion. \n\n\n\nThe practice of public penitence with ashes dates to the early centuries of Christianity and became universal in the Roman Rite by the Middle Ages. The day is marked by fasting and abstinence\, expressing bodily participation in spiritual renewal. \n\n\n\nAsh Wednesday does not celebrate despair\, but hope. The ashes are traced in the sign of the Cross\, reminding the faithful that repentance is ordered toward redemption. It is the Church’s solemn invitation to turn back to God with the whole heart and to begin again under the sign of mercy.

SUMMARY:Holy Innocents
DESCRIPTION:The Feast of the Holy Innocents commemorates the children of Bethlehem slain by King Herod in his attempt to destroy the Christ Child. Though they did not know Christ by reason or choice\, they bore witness to Him by their blood. The Church honours them as martyrs\, reminding the faithful that Christ’s coming immediately provoked the world’s hatred\, and that innocent suffering is never forgotten by God but gathered into His redemptive purpose.

SUMMARY:In Commemoratione Omnium Fidelium Defunctorum
DESCRIPTION:All Souls’ Day\, observed on 2 November\, is the solemn commemoration of all the faithful departed who have died in God’s grace but still undergo purification before entering Heaven. It is a day of profound charity and intercession\, when the Church Militant on earth prays earnestly for the souls in Purgatory — the Church Suffering — that they may be swiftly released from their temporal punishment and admitted to the vision of God. \n\n\n\nThe feast was first formally established by St. Odilo of Cluny in the year 998\, who directed all Cluniac monasteries to offer Masses and prayers for the departed on the day following All Saints. From this monastic beginning\, the devotion spread throughout Christendom\, until it became universal in the Western Church. The solemn pairing of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days expresses the mystical bond of charity uniting the threefold Church — Triumphant\, Suffering\, and Militant — in one communion of love and prayer. \n\n\n\nLiturgically\, the day is marked by black vestments\, the omission of the Gloria and Alleluia\, and the chanting of the Dies Irae\, a meditation on divine justice and mercy. The Epistle from St. Paul reminds the faithful that “it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead\, that they may be loosed from sins\,” while the Gospel reveals the will of Christ “that of all He has given\, nothing be lost.” \n\n\n\nPriests are uniquely privileged on this day to celebrate three Masses — one for a particular intention\, one for all the faithful departed\, and one for the Holy Father’s intentions — a privilege first granted by Pope Benedict XV in 1915 during the Great War\, in recognition of the countless souls lost in battle. \n\n\n\nSpiritually\, All Souls’ Day calls the faithful to acts of mercy\, prayer\, fasting\, and almsgiving offered for the repose of souls\, especially those most forgotten. It reminds us that love extends beyond death\, and that the holy sacrifice of the Mass remains the most efficacious aid for the departed. The day is not one of despair but of hopeful mourning\, for it affirms that every soul purified in God’s mercy shall one day share in the joy of the blessed — the perfect fulfilment of the communion of saints.

SUMMARY:Dominica XXI Post Pentecosten
DESCRIPTION:The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost\, in the traditional Roman Rite\, calls the faithful to perseverance\, forgiveness\, and vigilance as the liturgical year draws toward its close. The Church\, ever mindful of the final judgment and the need for mercy\, offers readings that unite the themes of divine justice and the necessity of reconciliation with God and neighbour. \n\n\n\nThe Epistle (Ephesians 6:10–17) exhorts the Christian to “put on the armour of God\,” standing firm against the wiles of the devil. St. Paul’s imagery evokes the spiritual battle every soul must fight: truth as a girdle\, righteousness as a breastplate\, faith as a shield\, and the word of God as a sword. The Apostle reminds us that our struggle is not merely human but against the powers of darkness — a theme that fittingly prepares the soul for the apocalyptic tone of the final Sundays before Advent. \n\n\n\nThe Gospel (Matthew 18:23–35) presents the parable of the unmerciful servant\, teaching that those who have been forgiven must likewise forgive. The king’s mercy toward his servant’s immense debt mirrors God’s infinite compassion; the servant’s refusal to forgive a smaller debt reveals the hardness of heart that excludes a soul from divine grace. “So also shall my heavenly Father do to you\,” says Christ\, “if each of you forgive not his brother from your hearts.” Thus\, forgiveness becomes the measure of our likeness to God and the condition for salvation. \n\n\n\nLiturgically\, the green vestments and continued use of the Gloria express that the Church remains in the long season of growth in grace\, yet the tone grows more urgent as the year wanes. The Collect prays that the faithful may be defended “in body and soul” against the assaults of evil — a plea harmonising with the Epistle’s martial imagery and the Gospel’s moral gravity. \n\n\n\nSpiritually\, this Sunday urges Christians to arm themselves with virtue and humility\, maintaining a spirit of mercy even amidst injustice and trial. It reminds us that the victory of good over evil begins within the heart reconciled to God and neighbour. In the quiet fidelity of daily life — prayer\, patience\, confession\, and forgiveness — the soul is strengthened for eternity\, clothed in the armour of Christ against the final hour.

SUMMARY:Omnium Sanctorum
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day\, celebrated on 1 November\, is one of the great solemnities of the Church’s year\, honouring all the saints — known and unknown — who have attained the vision of God in Heaven. It is both a day of triumph and thanksgiving\, when the Church Militant on earth joins in joyful communion with the Church Triumphant above. The feast reminds the faithful that sanctity is not the privilege of a few but the universal vocation of all Christians: to love God perfectly and to share in His glory. \n\n\n\nThe origins of the feast trace back to the early centuries\, when local churches commemorated martyrs together on a single day. By the eighth century\, Pope Gregory III dedicated an oratory in St Peter’s Basilica to all saints\, fixing the celebration on 1 November. Later\, Pope Gregory IV extended the feast to the whole Church\, uniting East and West in its observance. \n\n\n\nLiturgically\, the feast is marked with white vestments\, symbolising purity and victory. The Gloria and Te Deum are sung\, reflecting the heavenly joy of the saints’ eternal worship. The Epistle from the Apocalypse depicts the multitude “clothed in white robes” standing before the Lamb\, while the Gospel proclaims the Beatitudes — the charter of sainthood and the pattern of Christian perfection. \n\n\n\nSpiritually\, All Saints’ Day invites the faithful to lift their gaze from the struggles of this world to the eternal reward prepared for those who persevere in grace. It teaches that the saints are not distant ideals but living intercessors and companions\, urging all believers to imitate their faith\, humility\, and charity. As the Preface of the day declares\, God is “magnified in His saints\,” for their holiness is the reflection of His own divine splendour. \n\n\n\nIn the traditional calendar\, All Saints’ Day is followed by All Souls’ Day\, creating a profound rhythm of hope and remembrance — the glory of Heaven on one day\, and the prayer for the souls in purgatory on the next — expressing the unity of the Mystical Body of Christ across Heaven\, Purgatory\, and Earth.

SUMMARY:S. Raymundi Nonnati Confessoris
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast of St. Raymond Nonnatus\, Confessor\, falling this year on the Twelfth Sunday Post Pentecost\, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather to honour a saint famed for heroic charity\, profound purity\, and devotion to the liberation of captives\, while meditating on the Lord’s call to active love through the sacred liturgy of the Sunday. \n\n\n\nThe Missa “Os justi”\, proper to confessors not bishops\, recalls the righteous man whose lips speak wisdom and whose tongue utters judgment according to truth. St. Raymond Nonnatus\, born miraculously after his mother’s death in childbirth—hence nonnatus\, “not born” in the ordinary way—became a priest of the Mercedarian Order\, which was founded for the redemption of Christians enslaved by Muslims. St. Raymond not only raised funds for ransoms\, but when the money ran out\, he offered himself in exchange. While imprisoned\, he preached Christ boldly to his captors and\, for this\, had his lips padlocked shut—bearing this torment in silence rather than deny the Gospel. \n\n\n\nHis feast\, therefore\, is one of wordless eloquence: a testimony to redemptive suffering\, Marian devotion\, and pastoral courage in the face of evil. He is venerated especially as a patron of the falsely accused\, expectant mothers\, and those who suffer for speaking the truth. \n\n\n\nThe Twelfth Sunday Post Pentecost brings the Missa “Deus in adjutorium meum intende” with the parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:23–37). This Gospel\, so often sentimentalised\, is in fact a radical command: that love of neighbour must be concrete\, sacrificial\, and extend beyond ethnic\, social\, or religious boundaries. The priest and Levite pass by\, clinging to ritual purity or fear. Only the Samaritan—despised and outcast—stoops to bind wounds and pays the cost of mercy. The Epistle (2 Corinthians 3:4–9) teaches that the letter kills\, but the Spirit gives life: the new law\, written on hearts\, is the law of charity. \n\n\n\nIn the Brighton Oratory\, the faithful receive these converging lessons with gravity. In a society where speech is increasingly constrained\, where the innocent suffer and the truth is muzzled\, the example of St. Raymond Nonnatus stands like a lantern in the dark. He reminds the Church that love sometimes demands suffering in silence\, and sometimes speech that wounds before it heals. \n\n\n\nThus\, nourished by the Holy Eucharist\, the faithful are called to become Samaritans in action and Nonnatuses in fidelity: lovers of truth\, defenders of the vulnerable\, and servants of Christ’s captives—both physical and spiritual. \n\n\n\nSancte Raymonde Nonnate\, ora pro nobis. Vade\, et tu fac similiter.

SUMMARY:S. Bartholomæi Apostoli
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle\, falling this year on the Eleventh Sunday Post Pentecost\, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather to give thanks for the witness of one of the Church’s foundational pillars\, and to meditate upon the enduring call to interior conversion and apostolic faithfulness. \n\n\n\nThe Missa “Mihi autem nimis”\, proper to the feast of St. Bartholomew\, exalts the dignity of the Apostles—those chosen by Christ to lay the foundation of His Church and to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth. According to tradition\, St. Bartholomew—often identified with Nathanael\, the guileless Israelite praised by Our Lord in the Gospel (John 1:47)—preached the Faith as far as India\, Mesopotamia\, and ultimately Armenia\, where he was flayed alive and martyred for Christ. His steadfastness unto death\, his missionary zeal\, and his hidden humility stand as enduring marks of true apostolic character. \n\n\n\nThis same Sunday\, the Church’s liturgy of the Eleventh Sunday Post Pentecost presents the Missa “Deus\, in adjutórium meum intende” and the Gospel of the healing of the deaf-mute (Mark 7:31–37). Christ puts His fingers in the man’s ears\, touches his tongue\, and groans\, “Ephpheta”—“Be opened.” The miracle is both physical and symbolic\, a sign of how grace restores man’s capacity to hear the truth and speak rightly in praise of God. The Epistle (1 Corinthians 15:1–10)\, meanwhile\, speaks of the Resurrection as the heart of the apostolic preaching\, reminding the faithful that the Gospel we have received—like the Apostles—must be held fast\, lived out\, and proclaimed. \n\n\n\nIn this convergence of feast and Sunday\, the faithful of Brighton are called to deeper reflection. St. Bartholomew\, who heard and responded to Christ’s call\, who left all to follow\, and who bore the Gospel unto death\, is presented not merely as a hero of the past\, but as a pattern for every Christian today. And the Gospel’s deaf-mute man becomes a mirror for our times—a generation so often spiritually deaf to God’s Word and mute in confessing His truth. \n\n\n\nThe Mass\, in its unbroken Roman tradition\, offers the remedy: Christ continues to say Ephpheta to His Church—to open hearts\, ears\, and mouths to believe\, to speak\, and to glorify. In a world of falsehood and noise\, the faithful kneel in silence to receive the Word that heals and the Sacrament that saves. \n\n\n\nSancte Bartholomaee\, ora pro nobis. Domine\, aperi labia nostra\, et os nostrum annuntiabit laudem tuam.

SUMMARY:S. Hyacinthi Confessoris
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast of St. Hyacinth\, Confessor of the Order of Preachers—Apostle of the North—with the Commemoration of the Octave of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary\, and falling this year on the Tenth Sunday Post Pentecost\, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather to celebrate the witness of sanctity\, apostolic zeal\, and Marian triumph woven together in the sacred liturgy of this radiant day. \n\n\n\nThe Missa “Os justi”\, appointed for confessors not bishops\, marks the feast of St. Hyacinth of Poland\, O.P.\, whose tireless missionary labours earned him the title Apostle of the North. A disciple of St. Dominic and a man of profound Eucharistic and Marian devotion\, St. Hyacinth carried the Blessed Sacrament and a statue of the Virgin in his arms as he fled pagan invaders—choosing to risk death rather than abandon the Lord or His Mother. His preaching brought countless souls in Eastern Europe to the Faith\, from Poland to Scandinavia\, Lithuania to Ruthenia. \n\n\n\nThe Commemoration of the Octave of the Assumption ensures that Our Lady’s triumph is not confined to a single feast day\, but lingers throughout the week in the Church’s heart and on her lips. The antiphons and collects recall her bodily glorification\, the first-fruits of the redeemed creation\, and a cause for hope amid the valley of tears. \n\n\n\nYet this radiant day is not without admonition. The Tenth Sunday Post Pentecost brings the Missa “Dómine\, in tua misericórdia sperávi”\, and the solemn Gospel (Luke 18:9–14) in which Our Lord exposes the pride of the Pharisee and extols the humble tax collector. The Epistle (1 Corinthians 12:2–11) reminds us that even extraordinary spiritual gifts are given not for self-glory\, but for the building up of the Body of Christ in humility and truth. \n\n\n\nThus\, in Brighton\, the faithful are drawn into the paradox of grace: the lowly are exalted; the just man speaks wisdom; the Queen of Heaven was once the handmaid of the Lord; the powerful missionary was first a man of prayer. Through the Sacrifice of the Mass\, they are conformed anew to the spirit of true religion—marked not by boasting or presumption\, but by contrition\, awe\, and thanksgiving. \n\n\n\nSt. Hyacinth\, who preached Christ where He was not known\, and Our Lady\, who bore Him into the world and reigns now beside Him\, both point to the end of all Christian striving: union with God in humility\, holiness\, and heavenly glory. \n\n\n\nSancte Hyacinthe\, ora pro nobis. Assumpta est Maria in caelum\, gaudet exercitus angelorum.

SUMMARY:In Assumptione Beatæ Mariæ Virginis
DESCRIPTION:On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary\, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather with joyful reverence to honour the glorious mystery of Our Lady’s bodily assumption into heaven—a dogma of the Faith\, a triumph of grace\, and a foretaste of the resurrection promised to all who die in Christ. \n\n\n\nClad in festive vestments\, the sacred ministers ascend to the altar for the Missa “Gaudeámus omnes in Dómino”\, and the chapel resounds with the solemn strains of ancient chant: Let us all rejoice in the Lord\, celebrating a festival day in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The faithful lift up their hearts with the Church universal\, recalling that the Mother of God\, preserved from all stain of sin\, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the close of her earthly life. In her\, the Church sees the perfection of Christian discipleship and the pledge of her own final victory. \n\n\n\nThe Epistle (Judith 13:22–25) and Gospel (Luke 10:38–42) speak not only to the singular blessedness of Mary\, but to the divine logic by which lowliness is exalted\, and silent fidelity rewarded. Like Judith\, Mary is the one whom all generations shall call blessed. And like Mary of Bethany\, the Blessed Virgin chose “the better part” from the beginning\, giving her whole self to the Word of God and bearing Him into the world. \n\n\n\nThe faithful of Brighton\, surrounded by the decay of a secular culture that mocks purity\, dismisses humility\, and forgets eternity\, find in the Assumption a radiant sign of hope and consolation. In Mary\, exalted above the choirs of angels\, they behold not only the honour of womanhood but the destiny of all who cleave to Christ: to be raised body and soul into everlasting glory. \n\n\n\nAs incense rises before the statue of Our Lady\, crowned with roses and lilies\, prayers ascend for the triumph of her Immaculate Heart\, for the protection of the Church\, and for the grace to persevere in fidelity amidst the trials of this world. The faithful go forth renewed\, singing the Salve Regina not merely as petitioners\, but as children confident in their Queen and Mother\, who now reigns with Christ\, and intercedes without ceasing for those still in pilgrimage. \n\n\n\nAssumpta est Maria in caelum: gaudet exercitus angelorum. Mary has been assumed into heaven; the hosts of angels rejoice—and so does the Church on earth\, ever faithful\, ever Marian\, ever ancient\, ever new.

SUMMARY:S. Laurentii Martyris
DESCRIPTION:Similarly\, on the Feast of St. Laurence of Rome\, Deacon and Martyr\, falling this year on the Ninth Sunday Post Pentecost\, the faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate in Brighton gather to honour the noble witness of one of the most venerated martyrs of the early Church\, even as they heed the sober lessons of the liturgy appointed for the Sunday. \n\n\n\nThe Missa “Ecce Deus adjuvat me” of the Ninth Sunday resounds with the plea for divine assistance amidst tribulation. The Epistle (1 Corinthians 10:6–13) warns against the sins of Israel in the wilderness—idolatry\, murmuring\, lust—reminding the faithful that these things were written for our correction. The Gospel (Luke 19:41–47) recounts Our Lord’s weeping over Jerusalem and His righteous anger in cleansing the Temple: a call to true conversion of heart and reverent worship. \n\n\n\nIn this penitential light\, the figure of St. Laurence\, Deacon of the Roman Church and custodian of its treasures\, stands as a luminous contrast to the corruption and impiety that provoked Christ’s lament over the Holy City. When commanded by the pagan authorities to surrender the wealth of the Church\, Laurence famously presented the poor\, the sick\, and the orphans\, declaring\, “Behold the true treasures of the Church.” For this holy defiance and his unwavering charity\, he was slowly martyred on a gridiron\, rejoicing in the sufferings he bore for Christ. \n\n\n\nThe faithful of the Old Roman Apostolate\, gathered in Brighton under the sign of the Cross\, see in Laurence a model of ecclesial service\, sacrificial love\, and joyful endurance. As a deacon\, he reminds the Church of the inseparable union of liturgy and charity—of the need for holiness not only in the sanctuary but in the streets. As a martyr\, he bears witness that love of Christ is stronger than death\, and that the Church’s true glory lies not in gold or buildings\, but in fidelity to the Gospel. \n\n\n\nThus\, on this Sunday\, the faithful examine their hearts in light of Christ’s warning to Jerusalem\, and they invoke the intercession of St. Laurence that they may not be found barren in faith or lukewarm in charity. Strengthened by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the example of the saints\, they go forth bearing in themselves the treasure of the Gospel\, resolved to live as temples of the Holy Ghost\, and\, if need be\, to suffer joyfully for the sake of the Kingdom.
